ECOWAS Deepens Conflict Resolution Skills Of Senior Officials At Clingendael Institute
As West Africa continues to grapple with complex political transitions and security challenges, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is reinforcing its frontline diplomacy.
In a strategic move to strengthen regional peace efforts, the bloc has equipped its senior officials with advanced mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills at the prestigious Clingendael Institute of International Relations in The Hague, Netherlands.
The week-long capacity-building programme, brought together senior ECOWAS officials, Special Representatives, Resident and Permanent Representatives, Members of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) at ambassadorial level, and Members of the Council of the Wise.
Organised under the 10th edition of the Clingendael Academy Programme on Peace Negotiations, the training was supported by the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It focused on deepening participants’ practical understanding of negotiation and mediation dynamics, enhancing their ability to build consensus among stakeholders with differing interests, and fostering effective mediation strategies in volatile political contexts.
For five intensive days, ECOWAS envoys and diplomats examined what makes an effective negotiator or mediator, when and how to deploy mediation tools, and how to apply strategic thinking to conflict resolution.
The initiative reflects ECOWAS’s growing commitment to preventive diplomacy and peacebuilding — an approach that places skilled negotiation and dialogue at the heart of its regional stability agenda.
