Abia Warriors Cooking Something Special As Eguma Breathes Again, Rangers Grit Up North, Rivers Roar Back
Abia Warriors are fast becoming the team to fear in the Nigeria Premier Football League. Once written off as underdogs, the Umuahia-based side are now showing consistency, character, and confidence that could take them beyond their continental breakthrough last season.
Their latest statement came in Minna, where they edged Niger Tornadoes 2-1 in a thrilling encounter.
Sunday Megwo opened the scoring in the 38th minute before an unfortunate own goal by Sunday Akinmoladun gave the visitors a comfortable cushion before the break. Abdulrasheed Dabai’s 54th minute strike reignited Tornadoes’ hopes, but the Warriors held firm for a vital away win, proof that their rise is no fluke.
Elsewhere, Stanley Eguma finally found relief as Enyimba defeated Kano Pillars 2-0 in Aba, courtesy of John Bassey and Edidiong Ezekiel.
The result offers temporary respite for the under-fire coach while piling more pressure on the Ahmed Musa–influenced Pillars’ camp.
In Ilorin, Kwara United compounded Remo Stars’ woes with a 3-1 victory. Junior Aimufua’s brace and Babatunde Bright’s strike sealed the win, with Jabbar Malik’s late goal merely serving as consolation.
Rivers United reignited their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Nasarawa United in Port Harcourt, thanks to Timothy Zachariah’s first-half effort, while Bendel Insurance fans were left frustrated after their side squandered chances in a 1-1 draw against Warri Wolves.
Bayelsa United’s unpredictable run continued as Emo James’ brace secured a 2-1 comeback win over Plateau United in Yenagoa.
In Maiduguri, Rangers International earned a valuable point in a goalless draw against El-Kanemi Warriors, while Ibadan’s Shooting Stars were held 1-1 by Katsina United.
And in Lagos, Ikorodu City’s fairytale march goes on. Despite losing key players, the ambitious side climbed to third on the table after goals from Chidera Oparaocha and Ibifubara Dagogo sealed a 2–0 win over Kun Khalifat FC.
Abia Warriors may just be “cooking something special” and the rest of the league is beginning to smell it.
