FG Urges Nigerians To Unite Against Destabilising Foreign Narratives
In a world where perception can shape reality, the Federal Government has called on Nigerians to close ranks and resist the spread of false and destabilising narratives about the country by foreign interests.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the call when he received a delegation from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), led by its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olufemi Peters, in Abuja.
Idris emphasised that misinformation has the power to divide nations and must be collectively countered through the promotion of truth and patriotism.
“Nigerians should join hands together, collectively, to stop fake narratives about our country. We all have a responsibility to project the truth and protect Nigeria’s image,” he said.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing media and information literacy as a tool for promoting national unity, peace, and development.
He lauded NOUN for hosting the forthcoming International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), which is set for certification at the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in November 2025.
According to Idris, the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and underscores Nigeria’s leadership in promoting integrity and responsible media practices across Africa.
In his remarks, NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peters, thanked the Federal Government for its support and the ₦250 million grant provided for IMILI’s establishment.
He assured that the university possesses the institutional capacity, digital infrastructure, and academic expertise to sustain the Institute’s operations and global relevance.
“NOUN is fully prepared for the global accreditation of IMILI as a UNESCO Category Two Institute, which will further strengthen Nigeria’s reputation in education and media literacy,” Peters added.
