NUJ Commends DSS For Upholding Press Freedom After Release Of Detained Journalists

In a rare show of accountability and reform-minded leadership, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for the prompt release of two detained journalists and for its renewed commitment to protecting press freedom in Nigeria.

The journalists, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang of Jay 101.9 FM, Jos, were arrested while covering the funeral of the late mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe.

Their detention followed the circulation of a social media video showing a confrontation between a cleric and security operatives at the event.

The incident sparked widespread concern within the media community, with many viewing it as an infringement on journalists’ rights.

However, following swift intervention by the DSS Director-General, Mr Oluwatosin Ajayi, the duo were released.

The DSS boss reportedly reached out to the NUJ personally, apologising for the incident and directing his officers to ensure thorough investigations precede any future arrests.

In a statement signed by NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the Union described the gesture as a “positive and commendable shift” in the culture of Nigeria’s security institutions, noting that the DSS leadership’s willingness to admit errors and embrace reform signals growing respect for democratic principles.

“Press freedom is the bedrock of democracy, and journalists must never be treated as adversaries for performing their constitutional duties,” the NUJ stated.

The Union also urged the DSS and other security agencies to institutionalise accountability by sanctioning officers who abuse power or violate citizens’ rights, stressing that such discipline is essential to sustaining public confidence.

The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with security institutions to foster professionalism, safeguard press freedom, and strengthen national security.
