Lagos Government Halts All Reclamation Projects Over Environmental Concerns

The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all ongoing land reclamation projects across the state, citing mounting environmental risks.

The directive, announced on Thursday, comes amid growing concerns from environmentalists and residents over flooding, coastal erosion, and other ecological threats linked to unchecked reclamation.

Officials said the suspension would allow for a comprehensive review of the projects to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainable urban planning standards.

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, has witnessed rapid land reclamation in recent years, particularly along its coastline, to create space for housing and commercial developments.

However, experts warn that the practice worsens the city’s vulnerability to climate change and rising sea levels.

The government stressed that while it remains committed to infrastructure and urban expansion, public safety and environmental sustainability will not be compromised.

Developers and stakeholders have been urged to await further directives pending the review’s outcome.
