EU, UN Launch €15m Projects For Displaced Populations In Northern Nigeria
A combined investment of €15 million has been launched in Abuja to support the sustainable integration of displaced populations across five northern states of Nigeria.
The two EU-funded initiatives Sustainable Urban Integration of Displaced Populations in Northern Nigeria (SIDPIN) and Support for Protection, Assistance and Durable Solutions (SPADS) were unveiled at the UN House, with the Governors of Adamawa, Benue, Kano, Sokoto and Yobe States in attendance, alongside senior government officials, diplomats and humanitarian partners.
Implemented by IOM, UNHCR, UN-Habitat and the Danish Refugee Council, the projects will strengthen state and local government systems, co-create community planning, expand access to land, housing, education and services, and boost livelihoods with a focus on women and children.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, H.E. Gautier Mignot, said the programmes were designed to “address immediate challenges and ensure no one is left behind.”
UN Resident Coordinator, Mohamed Malick Fall, emphasised the need for lasting systems that promote dignity for all, while Benue State Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia called for “scalable, locally owned solutions to tackle conflict at its roots.”
The initiatives aim to improve livelihoods, strengthen social cohesion, and support both displaced families and host communities, setting a replicable model for durable solutions in Nigeria.
