Police Defend Legality Of Tinted-Glass Permit Amid NBA Court Action

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has defended its tinted-glass permit policy following reports that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has taken the Inspector-General of Police to court over the matter.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Force spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said the permit was backed by law, citing Section 2(3a) of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, which empowers the IGP to grant such approvals.

He explained that permits are only issued on health or security grounds and are vital in tackling crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery and “one chance” operations.

Hundeyin stressed that the charges attached to the permit were processing fees used to maintain digital infrastructure, in line with the Nigeria Police Act, 2020.

He added that the Force had recorded major successes through the Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR), which has helped recover stolen vehicles nationwide.

Rejecting claims that the policy is illegal or unconstitutional, the Police described them as misleading and aimed at undermining its image.

The IGP, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to transparency, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
