INEC Launches First Staff Welfare Committee, Yakubu Vows To Clear Salary Arrears
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has inaugurated its first-ever Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), to strengthen staff welfare and dialogue within the commission.
At the ceremony in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, pledged to clear outstanding arrears from the national minimum wage, beginning this month.
He assured staff that the January–March 2024 backlog would be fully settled by November.
“Staff matters are very dear to the Commission. The most important aspect of staff welfare for me is the regular payment of salaries.
No matter how small, it must be regular,” Yakubu stressed, noting INEC’s track record of paying salaries before the 25th of each month.
The newly inaugurated JCC executives, led by Mrs Vera O. Awoh as President, will serve as a bridge between staff and management.
Representatives of the Ministry of Labour hailed the initiative as “the voice of the voiceless” but urged constructive engagement rather than confrontation.
Mrs Awoh, in her acceptance speech, said the platform would be used to foster harmony and productivity, adding: “We now have a platform, and we now have a voice.”
