NAWOJ, ActionAid, and Global Affairs Canada Launch $15m Women’s Leadership Project In Nigeria

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has partnered with ActionAid Nigeria, Global Affairs Canada (GAC), and other women-led organisations to launch the Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria (RWVL) project, backed by a landmark grant of 15 million Canadian dollars over five years.

Unveiled under the theme “Consolidating Gains and Strategic Partnerships for Sustained Impact,” the initiative aims to strengthen women’s rights organisations across Nigeria by providing funding, capacity-building, and support to advance gender equality.

Speaking at the launch, ActionAid Nigeria’s Deputy Country Director, Hajiya Suwaiba Dankabo, stressed the urgent need to increase women’s representation in leadership and ensure inclusivity for marginalised groups, including women with disabilities, sex workers, and children.

NAWOJ National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, joined other women leaders in pledging support for the project.

A statement signed by NAWOJ FCT Vice Chairperson, Bolanle Okpevo, confirmed the inauguration of an Agile Project Team to oversee implementation over the next five years.

Representing the Canadian High Commissioner, an official reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to women’s rights and leadership, praising the media for amplifying women’s voices and declaring: “When women lead, Nigeria thrives. When Nigeria thrives, we all rise.”

The launch attracted key stakeholders, including the FCT NAWOJ Chairperson, Bassey Ita Ikpang, officials from ECOWAS, the Federal Ministries of Women Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs, UN Women Nigeria, and traditional leaders, marking a united front to empower Nigerian women and girls.
