ICPC, COREN Join Forces To End Substandard Projects and Building Collapses

Nigeria has drawn a battle line against corruption and shoddy infrastructure, as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) sealed a strategic alliance to restore integrity to the nation’s construction and engineering sector.

At the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja on Thursday, ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, declared that the era of ghost projects, inflated contracts and substandard works is over.

“No more certificates for ghost projects or shoddy work,” Dr Aliyu warned. “Where engineers compromise standards, we will refer them to COREN for sanctions and prosecute them in court. Nigerians deserve quality infrastructure and full value for public funds.”

He stressed that COREN’s technical expertise will be a game-changer for ICPC’s Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative (CEPTI), ensuring that government-funded projects are built to approved designs and safety standards.

Lamenting the recurring tragedy of building collapses in Nigeria, the ICPC boss called for urgent preventive action:

“We must stop this cycle before more lives are lost. Together, we will investigate root causes, block loopholes, and ensure only qualified professionals handle public projects.”

Dr Aliyu emphasised that ICPC cannot be everywhere at once, urging COREN to act as the commission’s “eyes on the ground” in safeguarding public trust and the integrity of the engineering profession.

On his part, COREN President, Engr Prof Sadiq Abubakar, affirmed the council’s readiness to enforce compliance, sanction erring practitioners and help rebuild confidence in Nigeria’s engineering industry.

“This MoU is not just a document it is a renewed commitment to uphold professional excellence, public safety and national development,” Prof Abubakar said.

With this partnership, both agencies sent a strong message: the days of cutting corners in Nigeria’s engineering projects are numbered.
