Information Minister Urges Calm Over Badegi FM Suspension

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for calm following the suspension of Badegi FM, a radio station based in Minna, Niger State.

The station’s operations were halted on 1 August after Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago reportedly ordered the closure during an expanded APC Caucus Meeting in Minna, citing alleged unethical broadcasting and incitement against the government. The Honourable Minister of Information was in attendance at the meeting.

Responding to concerns from media stakeholders, the Ministry clarified that only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has the legal authority to suspend broadcasting licences in Nigeria.

The Ministry acknowledged the action taken by the Niger State Government but welcomed its decision to escalate the matter to the NBC for formal investigation.

In a statement signed by the Minister’s media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, the Minister assured the public that the NBC is equipped to handle the issue fairly and independently.

He urged all parties involved to remain calm while the matter is being looked into, stressing the importance of upholding due process and media responsibility.
