No Need To Panic: Nigerian Minister Calms Fears Over Anti-Nigerian Protests In Ghana
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has urged calm and reassured Nigerians that there is “no cause for alarm” over recent viral videos suggesting anti-Nigerian protests in Ghana.
Speaking in Accra during a joint press briefing with Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Samuel Ablakwa, the Nigerian envoy explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had sent her as a special envoy to Ghana following growing concerns back home.
“We’re here on a fact-finding mission in response to worrying videos that sparked tension in Nigeria,” she said. “But I can confidently say things are calm on the ground.
No protests, no threats Ghanaians have shown hospitality, and the government has taken swift steps to address the situation.”
She praised Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama for his quick intervention, which she said had helped de-escalate the situation.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu also stressed the deep historical and cultural ties between both countries, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could harm peaceful coexistence.
In his remarks, Ghana’s Foreign Minister reiterated the country’s commitment to protecting all residents both citizens and foreigners.
He urged everyone to remain law-abiding and avoid actions that could incite division.
Addressing one of the more viral issues, Ablakwa clarified that a recent incident involving a Nigerian man accused of attempting to form a ‘kingdom’ in Ghana had been resolved, noting there was no intention to claim territory.
Both ministers called for stronger cooperation through the Nigeria-Ghana Joint Commission and renewed efforts to promote citizen-to-citizen understanding.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu was accompanied by Senior Ministry Officials, including Ambassadors Regina Ocheni and Innocent Iwejuo, and Mr. Ajuluchukwu Eze.
