The Leadership Of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed: Driving The FRSC Towards A Safer Nigeria

By Martin Odiete

Since his appointment by President Bola Tinubu in May 2024, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has wasted no time in making his mark at the helm of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

With decades of experience and a clear-cut vision, he has set the organisation on a firm path towards a safer Nigeria, reinforcing road safety as a national priority.

A New Era of Strategic Repositioning

One of his early steps in office was a strategic redeployment of five senior FRSC officers to key positions, a move designed to boost operational efficiency and deliver results.

This leadership shake-up is in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring that the right people are in place to make the most impact.

Corps Marshal Mohammed’s leadership style is driven by purpose and precision.

At the heart of his agenda is a multi-pronged strategy focused on: Strategic Planning: Developing robust frameworks to reduce road crashes and fatalities.

Public Awareness: Rolling out consistent education campaigns to promote safe driving habits.

Operational Efficiency: Strengthening the Corps’ capacity to respond to road safety challenges swiftly and effectively.

Innovation Through Partnerships

Under Mohammed’s watch, the FRSC has embraced a collaborative approach.

From engaging with online gaming platforms to spread road safety messages to exploring cross-sector partnerships, the Corps is adapting to modern communication channels to reach wider audiences, especially the youth.

This openness to innovation is already paying off. The FRSC, under his leadership, has earned both national and international accolades, cementing its status as a trailblazer in road safety management.

Honours and Awards: Recognition of Excellence
The FRSC’s achievements haven’t gone unnoticed.

In 2024 alone, the Corps racked up a number of prestigious awards, including: Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity Ranking: FRSC emerged top among military and paramilitary agencies.

SERVICOM Awards:

Most Innovative Parastatal for service delivery and ease of doing business.

Most Supportive CEO for Mohammed’s exceptional leadership and support for SERVICOM’s work.
Special Recognition for scoring above 75% in the annual performance ratings.

Kofi Annan Road Safety Award: A proud moment for Nigeria, this honour was given in recognition of the FRSC’s digital transformation particularly the rollout of the FRSC Mobile App, which has redefined road safety monitoring in Africa.

Adding to these milestones, Nigeria, under Mohammed’s leadership, secured the right to host the permanent Secretariat of the Africa Lead Road Safety Management Agency, a major diplomatic and safety win for the country.

The Road Ahead: Challenges and Collective Action
Despite these gains, the road to safer highways is not without bumps. Infrastructure gaps and enforcement limitations remain significant hurdles.

Yet, with Corps Marshal Mohammed’s experience, foresight, and commitment, the FRSC is more than equipped to push through and deliver lasting reforms.

But road safety is not solely the responsibility of the FRSC.

Mohammed understands that a collaborative approach is vital. Government agencies, private stakeholders, and most importantly, everyday Nigerians all have a role to play.

Simple actions such as obeying traffic regulations, keeping vehicles roadworthy, and reporting hazards can save lives.

This collective responsibility is at the core of the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) 2021–2030, which aims to reduce road traffic fatalities by at least 50% by the year 2030.

A Shared Journey Towards Safer Roads
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed is undoubtedly steering the FRSC in the right direction.

His reforms, recognition, and results prove a leader committed to protecting lives on Nigerian roads.

However, lasting change will only come when all road users actively support this mission.

Together, with the FRSC’s leadership and citizens’ cooperation, a future of safer roads and fewer tragedies are well within reach.
