Nigeria’s FRSC Named Africa’s Road Safety Secretariat In Historic Continental Honour
In a major continental milestone, Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has been named the Permanent Secretariat of all Road Safety Lead Agencies (AARSLA) in Africa.
The announcement was made during the inaugural General Assembly of the continental body, which is taking place in Lusaka, Zambia, from 26–27 June 2025.
This prestigious designation not only reaffirms FRSC’s leadership in road safety but also signals a new era of enhanced collaboration among African nations to tackle road crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
As Permanent Secretariat, the FRSC will now coordinate road safety efforts across Africa, promoting shared strategies, best practices, and the implementation of the African Road Safety Action Plan.
Reacting to the development, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described the recognition as a vote of confidence in Nigeria’s commitment to saving lives on the roads. “This is not just a recognition of Nigeria’s efforts, but a call to greater responsibility,” he said, pledging to work with all African countries to build safer and smarter transport systems.
He credited the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for its unwavering support, which he said laid the foundation for the Corps’ continued success.
He also highlighted his administration’s focus on digitalisation and public sensitisation as key tools that will drive the Secretariat’s work forward.
The birth of the continental secretariat stems from a resolution of the Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Policy Programme (SSATP), a World Bank-backed initiative, which convened its General Assembly in Cotonou, Benin Republic in March 2025. SSATP works closely with the African Union Commission and UNECA, forming a powerful platform for driving transport policy across 43 African countries.
This latest milestone aligns with the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030), aimed at halving road traffic deaths and injuries worldwide.
It comes just months after FRSC was crowned Africa’s best road safety agency at the Kofi Annan Road Safety Awards in Eswatini—a testament to its growing continental reputation.
The Corps is now calling on governments, private sector actors, civil society, and development partners to join hands in building a safer, more sustainable road transport environment across Africa.
With this honour, Nigeria takes another bold step forward in continental leadership—and FRSC stands at the heart of Africa’s journey towards safer roads.
