ECOWAS, AU Deepen Ties For Africa’s Stability, Growth

In a strategic move to bolster regional cooperation, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, on Thursday 26th June 2025, received the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Ambassador Selma Malika Haddafi, at the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja.

The high-level meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between ECOWAS and the African Union, particularly in the areas of peace, integration, development, and institutional synergy.

Ambassador Haddafi commended ECOWAS for its achievements in promoting peace and regional integration.

She called for more robust cooperation among Africa’s regional economic communities, noting that “regular reporting, sustained dialogue, and deeper coordination” would significantly enhance the AUC’s partnerships with global stakeholders.

President Touray, in response, reaffirmed ECOWAS’s commitment to advancing trade, good governance, and political stability through democratic ideals.

He appreciated the AU’s ongoing solidarity, especially in harmonising mediation efforts and consultations across the continent.

The pair also discussed preparations for the upcoming African Union Summit in Malabo, which will spotlight pressing continental issues such as agriculture, humanitarian crises, counter-terrorism, and unconstitutional changes of government.

Both leaders closed the meeting by pledging to deepen institutional cooperation in pursuit of a more united, stable, and prosperous Africa.
