CDS Engages Media Executives, Seeks Stronger Military-Media Alliance For National Security

In a bid to deepen transparency and bolster public trust, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, hosted media executives at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, calling for stronger collaboration between the Armed Forces and the press in the fight against insecurity.

Speaking at the high-level engagement, the CDS described the media as a “central player” in modern warfare, especially in countering misinformation and shaping public perception.

He noted that beyond boots on the ground, Nigeria’s security challenges now demand a “Whole-of-Society” approach that brings together the military, government, and citizens.

“We are not just fighting on the battlefield; we are also waging a war for hearts and minds,” General Musa stated. “That’s where you—the media are crucial. The narrative you tell can either build or break morale.”

Addressing the tragic loss of lives in Yelwata, Benue State, and other areas, the CDS extended condolences to the affected families and reiterated the military’s commitment to justice and national healing

The event also marked two years since the current crop of Service Chiefs assumed office.

Reflecting on their journey, the CDS praised the seamless leadership transition in the Nigerian Army following the passing of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, hailing his successor, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for bringing renewed vigour to the force.

General Musa acknowledged the ever-evolving nature of Nigeria’s security threats ranging from terrorism and insurgency to organised crime and secessionist violence but remained optimistic. “While kinetic operations continue, over 70 per cent of modern warfare is non-kinetic.

Strategic communication and public engagement are no longer optional they are essential.”

He urged the media to remain professional, objective, and nation-oriented, describing truth and trust as the cornerstones of national resilience.
