FG Reaffirms Commitment To A Free, Vibrant Press
The Federal Government has reiterated its unwavering support for a free, responsible, and vibrant press, describing the media as a cornerstone of democracy and national development.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance in Abuja during the public unveiling of Nigeria Media Renaissance, Perspectives on Online Publishing, an initiative by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).
The Minister, praised GOCOP’s role in championing ethical journalism and innovation in the digital space, saying “The Federal Government is committed to a free, responsible, and vibrant press that aligns with the enduring core values of journalism — truth, fairness, and accountability.”
He noted that as Nigeria celebrates 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, there is a dire need for reflection on the media’s role in deepening democratic ideals and bridging the gap between government and the people.
“Democracy is not just the right to vote; it must deliver real dividends, better living standards, rights and freedoms, and robust infrastructure,” he said. “That’s why President Tinubu is focused on economic reforms, infrastructure investment, and enhanced social services.”
Idris emphasised the crucial role of online publishers in shaping public discourse, promoting unity, and holding leaders to account.
He, however, warned against the dangers of fake news, describing it as a serious threat to public peace and democratic stability.
The Minister announced the establishment of a UNESCO-backed Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja by November 2025, aimed at boosting media professionalism and tackling misinformation.
He commended GOCOP for producing the Nigeria Media Renaissance publication, saying it signals a timely rebirth of values, ethics, and innovation in the journalism space.
A statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, said the event drew an array of dignitaries including former Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga; NIPR President Dr. Ike Neliaku; DG of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace; and others from across the media and development sector.
