Tanzania’s Professor Janabi Nominated As WHO Africa Director

In a historic decision during a Special Session of the World Health Organization, WHO, Regional Committee for Africa held in Geneva, Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi of Tanzania has been nominated as the next Regional Director for the World Health Organization’s African Region.

The nomination follows the sudden passing of Regional Director-elect Dr Faustine Ndugulile in November 2024, prompting the urgent election.

Professor Janabi emerged the top choice among strong contenders including Dr N’da Konan Michel Yao of Côte d’Ivoire, Dr Mohammed Lamine Dramé of Guinea, and Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa of Togo.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Janabi pledged unwavering commitment: “Thank you for your trust in me. I will not let you down. As we face infectious diseases, noncommunicable illnesses, climate change and funding gaps, we must harness African resilience and unity.”

WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, lauded the nomination, stating: “Professor Janabi brings the right experience at a critical time. I look forward to working with him for a healthier, safer, fairer Africa.”

The nomination now awaits formal appointment by the WHO Executive Board later this month.

Once confirmed, Professor Janabi will serve a five-year term, with eligibility for reappointment.
