One Dead, Six Injured In Onitsha Gas Explosion As Police Boost Rescue Efforts

A tragic gas cylinder explosion rocked the plumbing market along Uga Street near the Onitsha Head Bridge on 16 May 2025, leaving one person dead and six others seriously injured.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that officers from the Onitsha Head Bridge Division joined forces with good-spirited individuals to rescue the six victims, who are now receiving medical treatment. Sadly, one person died and has been taken to the morgue.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion occurred while a welder was working on metal, causing the gas cylinder to overheat and explode.
To prevent looting and other crimes in the aftermath, police have secured the scene.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has expressed deep concerns over the incident and shared crucial safety tips.
He urged the public to carry out regular inspections of gas cylinders, store them securely, and always follow manufacturer guidelines during use.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, reiterated the Command’s commitment to public safety and called for increased awareness and adherence to safety practices to avoid similar tragedies in future.
