Information Minister Urges Media To Shun Publicity For Terrorists, Criminals

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has made a passionate appeal to Nigerian journalists and media houses to refrain from amplifying the voices and actions of terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements, warning that such exposure only serves to embolden them and undermine national security.

Speaking during the seventh edition of the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing Series at the National Press Centre in Abuja, the Minister underscored the vital role of the media in shaping public perception and boosting the morale of security forces.

“As gatekeepers and partners in nation-building, the media must support our military’s efforts by spotlighting their sacrifices and successes,” Idris said. “We must deny these groups the undue publicity they crave. They must be taken off the front pages and reported accurately for what they are criminals, not heroes.”

The Minister cautioned that terrorist and criminal groups increasingly exploit media coverage and social media platforms to spread fear, peddle misinformation, and lure vulnerable individuals into their ranks.

He urged editors and reporters to act responsibly and patriotically by avoiding sensationalism and ensuring their reports do not inadvertently serve as tools for extremist propaganda.

“These are not freedom fighters; they are murderers, kidnappers, and destroyers, and they must be presented as such,” he asserted.

Referencing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Idris reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening national security through sustained investment in modern military equipment, enhanced intelligence capabilities, and international partnerships.

He also highlighted the significance of the Ministerial Press Briefing Series, a platform initiated by his ministry, which offers ministers an opportunity to inform the public about achievements, ongoing projects, and policy directions. “This forum, which is broadcast live on national television and streamed on social media, reflects our commitment to transparency, accountability, and public engagement,” he said.

Idris commended the media for their continued support of the series and for helping to keep Nigerians informed about government programmes and reforms.

The briefing also featured presentations from the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and the Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Abbas, who shared updates on progress within their respective ministries.
