Nigeria Marks World Press Freedom Day 2025 With Focus On AI, Media Integrity

As the world marks World Press Freedom Day 2025 today, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom while embracing technological advancements responsibly.
With this year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World : The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” the Minister highlighted the growing influence of AI in shaping narratives and the urgent need to balance innovation with ethical journalism.
Idris stressed that while AI offers powerful tools for media development, it also poses threats through misinformation, deepfakes, and disinformation campaigns.
He called on media organisations to remain vigilant, ensure that platforms are not exploited by subversive elements, and continue to uphold truth and national unity.
The Minister, also revealed that the government is developing a national policy framework on the responsible use of AI in the media space, aimed at fostering innovation without compromising press freedom or national security.
