Enugu LG Chairman Foils Kidnap Attempt, Engages Armed Ambushers

In a dramatic twist of fate, heavily armed kidnappers laying siege on a road in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State met more than they bargained for when their first target turned out to be the convoy of the Local Government Chairman, Bar. Chijioke Ezugwu.

The criminals, dressed as herders and wielding AK-47 rifles, reportedly emerged from the bush last week to ambush what they thought was an unsuspecting motorist. But unknown to them, it was the council boss, fresh from a security meeting on tackling such threats.

Without hesitation, Bar. Ezugwu known for his hands-on security approach leapt into action alongside his security aides, engaging the gunmen in a fierce exchange that forced them to flee into the nearby forest.

Witnesses say the attackers opened fire, but were met with superior tactics and firepower from the chairman’s team, who later chased the criminals into the bush before resuming their journey.

In swift response to the attack, Bar. Ezugwu ordered the newly formed vigilante and farm protection squads to comb the forests for the fleeing suspects.

The council has recently boosted its security apparatus, including restructuring the neighbourhood watch, equipping personnel, and collaborating with formal security agencies.

Sources say the chairman has since been joining patrols day and night across volatile areas to ensure the safety of residents and farmers in the agrarian-rich region.
