In a democratic system, the power to elect and recall representatives rests with the people, but strict constitutional guidelines determine the process.
In a recent development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected a petition seeking to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
The electoral body announced its decision on Thursday via its official X account, stating that the petition failed to meet the requirements outlined in Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution.
“The petition for the recall of the Senator representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended),” INEC insisted.
The recall attempt stemmed from a petition submitted by some members of her constituency, following her suspension from the Senate for allegedly flouting the chamber’s rules.
With INEC’s verdict, the embattled senator remains in office, at least for now.
