A Civil Society Organisation, Global Rights, has strongly condemned the brutal extrajudicial killing of sixteen hunters in Uromi, Edo State, on March 27, 2025.
The victims, allegedly mistaken for kidnappers, were lynched by local vigilantes in a shocking act of jungle justice.
Describing the killings as a grave violation of human rights, the organisation emphasised that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees the right to life and due process. “No frustration over insecurity justifies individuals taking the law into their own hands,” Global Rights stated.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Abiodun Baiyewu, the group called for an immediate, full-scale investigation to identify and prosecute all those responsible.
It also urged leaders at all levels to preach peace and prevent the tragedy from escalating ethnic and religious tensions.
“This incident underscores the urgent need for the government to restore public confidence in law enforcement and end the rise of vigilante justice,” the statement concluded.
Global Rights extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged authorities to uphold justice to prevent further lawlessness.
