Across West Africa, drug abuse has become a growing public health concern, affecting individuals, families, and communities.

In response, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is strengthening its commitment to combating substance use disorders by supporting rehabilitation initiatives.

On March 27, 2025, ECOWAS officially handed over a newly renovated and equipped Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano, Nigeria.

This extension of the Dater Ward for Occupational Therapy aims to provide better care and support for people with drug use disorders.

At the handover ceremony, Dr. Daniel Akwasi Amankwaah, Principal Programme Officer of the ECOWAS Drug Prevention and Control Division, presented the facility’s keys to Prof. Abdulrahman Abba Sheshe, Chief Medical Director of AKTH.

The event, attended by hospital staff and key stakeholders, also included advocacy discussions on improving drug treatment services in the region.

This initiative highlights ECOWAS’ ongoing efforts to assist member states in tackling drug-related issues, ensuring access to proper treatment, and promoting rehabilitation as a key strategy for recovery.
