NUJ President Yahya Unveils Media Enhancement Bill Plans
Journalists and union leaders gathered in Abuja to celebrate the contributions of the immediate past President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo, in a grand reception filled with tributes.
NUJ President Alhassan Yahya used the occasion to call for unity amongst journalists, emphasising the need for collective action to address industry challenges, especially on remuneration and media protections.
“We must work together to elevate our union and improve journalists’ welfare,” Yahya stated, announcing plans for a Media Enhancement Bill.
He revealed that key media stakeholders—including the Guild of Editors, International Press Institute (IPI), and Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR)—would collaborate to push the bill through the National Assembly.
In his response, Isiguzo commended Yahya’s leadership and expressed optimism about the bill’s success. “This time, with all major stakeholders involved, we have a real chance,” he said, highlighting the urgent need for legal protections for Nigerian journalists.
Other union leaders, including Vice Presidents Adeiza Momohjimoh, Ronke Samo, and Zare Baba, praised Isiguzo’s legacy, describing him as a leader of integrity who laid a strong foundation for NUJ’s future.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including NUJ Deputy National President Dr. Bimbo Oyetunde, NAWOJ National Chairperson Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim, NUJ FCT Chairman Comrade Grace Ike, and other stakeholders who lauded Isiguzo’s contributions to journalism in Nigeria.
