CISLAC Urges Police Compliance with Public Service Rules, Calls for Legislative Review

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has called for immediate adherence to public service rules in police leadership, warning that ongoing conflicts between the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) threaten national security and the rule of law.
CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Musa (Rafsanjani), condemned the Inspector General of Police (IGP)’s alleged directive allowing Senior Officers to stay in service beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 or 35 years of service.
He described this as a violation of the PSC’s constitutional mandate and a dangerous precedent for institutional integrity.
The Executive Director also criticised the amendment to the 2020 Police Act, which grants the IGP a fixed four-year tenure, arguing that it contradicts existing public service regulations.
CISLAC urged the National Assembly to review the law and ensure tenure clarity to prevent further leadership conflicts.
Rafsanjani called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the judiciary to intervene, ensuring adherence to constitutional provisions.
He warned that failure to address these issues could weaken Nigeria’s security institutions and erode public trust in governance.
CISLAC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
