The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has provided $770,143 in humanitarian aid to support 560 vulnerable families in Cabo Verde.
The funding, announced by the ECOWAS Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, Madam Sintiki Tarfa-Ube, during a meeting with the Cabo Verdean government on January 27, 2025, aims to enhance the livelihoods of those affected by the 2023 floods and ongoing food insecurity.
The aid will support the Family Empowerment Project for Sustainable Development (PEFDS), targeting communities in São Domingos, Ribeira Grande de Santiago, Tarrafal, and Praia.
Key beneficiaries include 200 women receiving financial assistance for income-generating activities, 200 families receiving food baskets, and 80 individuals benefiting from home rehabilitation projects.
Cabo Verde’s Secretary of State for Social Inclusion, Lídia Lima, welcomed the intervention, emphasising its role in complementing government efforts to combat extreme poverty.
An ECOWAS monitoring team will assess project implementation and identify areas for improvement, reinforcing the regional body’s commitment to humanitarian assistance across its member states.
