Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger Officially Exit ECOWAS, but Regional Ties Remain

Abuja, Nigeria – January 29, 2025

The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially taken effect today.

ECOWAS has however announced temporary measures to ensure minimal disruption for citizens and businesses.

A statement from the Communication’s department of the ECOWAS Commission says despite their exit, nationals of the three countries will continue to use ECOWAS passports and identity cards, enjoy visa-free movement, and benefit from the regional trade liberalisation scheme. ECOWAS also assured continued cooperation with officials from the departing nations while discussions on future engagements take place.

The decision to maintain these provisions highlights the regional body’s commitment to solidarity and economic stability, even as it navigates the impact of this significant geopolitical shift.
