Global Rights Calls for Action Following Niger State Tanker Explosion

A Civil Society Organisation, Global Rights, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic petrol tanker explosion in Niger State that claimed over 70 lives on January 20, 2025.
The advocacy group described the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of systemic safety and infrastructure failures in Nigeria.
In a press statement signed by its Executive Director, Abiodun Baiyewu, the organisation called for urgent measures to prevent similar tragedies.
These include comprehensive investigations, improved road infrastructure, stricter tanker regulations, and investments in safer fuel transportation alternatives such as pipelines and rail systems.
Global Rights urged the government, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), and fuel tanker owners to collaborate on enforcing safety standards and raising public awareness.
It also condemned the dangerous practice of fuel scooping at accident scenes, urging stricter penalties and quicker site security by emergency responders.
“The Niger State tragedy is a wake-up call for proactive and sustained action to protect lives. Preventing future disasters requires the commitment of all stakeholders,” Baiyewu said.
The organisation reaffirmed its dedication to advocating for the safety and well-being of Nigerians, urging authorities to prioritise accountability and implement lasting solutions.
