The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has strongly denied claims suggesting its involvement in the explosion at an NNPC wellhead in Buguma, Rivers State.

Responding to media reports and allegations by a Buguma Community spokesperson, the NAF described the accusations as misleading and baseless.
In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, the NAF clarified that video evidence from prior missions showed the wellhead leaking crude oil for an extended period due to illegal activities in the area.

The footage, including recordings from December 2024, confirmed the site was already damaged and the barge burnt before NAF operations in the vicinity.
The NAF emphasised its strict operational protocols, ensuring that only illegal refining sites and equipment are targeted, prioritising civilian safety and infrastructure protection.

The Service reiterated its commitment to professionalism and urged media outlets to verify facts before publication to avoid spreading misinformation.
The NAF assured the public of its dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s resources and combating crude oil theft, while maintaining respect for human life and accountability.
