The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep condolences to the families of victims affected by the devastating fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction, Niger State.

Describing the tragedy as “disheartening and disastrous,” the Corps Marshal lamented the loss of 73 lives in the inferno and urged tanker operators to strictly adhere to safety protocols during fuel transportation.

He emphasised that such preventable incidents should never occur again, especially given the ongoing safety campaigns by the FRSC.

The explosion, which also left several people injured, prompted swift intervention by FRSC teams and other stakeholders to manage traffic and provide medical care to survivors.

Victims have been transported to hospitals, including Suleja General Hospital, for treatment.

Mohammed revealed that the FRSC’s accident investigation unit will collaborate with relevant agencies to uncover the cause of the incident and propose measures to prevent future occurrences.

He commended the Niger State Governor for his prompt response and stressed the need for inter-agency collaboration and public engagement to prioritise safety.

As the nation continues to recover from a similar tragedy in Jigawa last year, the Corps Marshal appealed for support for survivors and their families while assuring Nigerians of the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring safer roads.

“Our collective efforts are crucial in preventing avoidable losses and guaranteeing the safety of road travelers,” he said, while praying for the souls of the deceased and the quick recovery of the injured.
