The European Union has pledged €510 million in humanitarian assistance to Nigeria and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa as part of its €1.9 billion initial humanitarian budget for 2025.
This funding aims to support vulnerable populations in regions such as the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin, and North-West Nigeria, where humanitarian crises continue unabated.
EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, emphasised the need for safe and unhindered access to those in need.
“Funding is not enough—we need to be able to reach the most vulnerable. All parties must respect International Humanitarian Law,” she stated.
The EU is going beyond Africa to also allocate €470 million to the Middle East and North Africa, with a focus on Gaza and Yemen, and €140 million to Ukraine.
Other regions, including Latin America, Asia, and the Pacific, will also benefit from targeted assistance to address ongoing crises.
This announcement reinforces the EU’s role as a global leader in humanitarian aid, with over 300 million people projected to need assistance in 2025.
A statement by the Press Officer for the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Modestus Chukwulaka, said the funding will be channeled through trusted partners, including the UN, Red Cross, and non-governmental organisations.
