December Stampede: Kaigama Urges Unity, Compassion At Memorial Mass For Victims
The Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, has held a memorial mass for the victims of the tragic December 21st, 2024 stampede, which claimed 10 lives and left 11 injured during a food distribution programme for the needy.
The mass, held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja venue of the tragic incident, brought together a galaxy of worshippers.
In his homily tagged “Be consoled, be consoled, O my people! says your God”, the Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, called for unity, compassion, and collaboration to alleviate poverty and provide essential support for the underprivileged.
He reminded the congregation of the Church’s mission to comfort and serve, saying prayer is the strongest weapon in times of grief.
The Archbishop commended the selfless efforts of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for their long-standing commitment to aiding the vulnerable, naming them the Heroes and Heroines of 2024.
Kaigama, while mourning the victims, called for enhanced crowd control measures to prevent such incidents in the future and urged Catholics to lead by example, stressing the importance of living out their baptismal promises by rejecting evil and embracing acts of charity.
FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike was represented by Grace Adayilo while FCT Police Commissioner, was represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police- Harrison Oruruo at the event.
