The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has applauded the repatriation of $52.88 million recovered from former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, by the United States government.

In a statement, CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Rafsanjani, praised the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian and US governments in achieving this milestone.

He, however, urged the Federal Government to ensure the funds are used transparently and for projects that directly benefit Nigerians, such as rural electrification, as proposed.

“We need clarity on how much of the funds will reach citizens and the role of government agencies,” Rafsanjani noted, warning against mismanagement while emphasising the need to adhere to the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act 2022.

CISLAC stressed that visible deployment of the funds is crucial for restoring public trust in the government’s anti-corruption efforts, adding that failure to do so could spark fears of re-looting.

The organisation also called for renewed commitment to recovering other stolen assets and ensuring their impact on national development.
