The Defence Headquarters has dismissed claims by Amnesty International that over 10,000 civilians died in military detention facilities during the Boko Haram insurgency.
These allegations, made at a press conference on December 5, 2024, the Defence Headquarters through the Director Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, described as baseless, mischievous, and untimely.
In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja, Buba said, the Nigerian military, known for its professionalism, operates strictly within international humanitarian laws and rules of engagement.
He said arrested suspects are profiled and handed over to relevant agencies for release or prosecution adding that to deter misconduct, standing court-martials are in place to ensure justice within operational theaters.
According to the DMO, the Armed Forces under the leadership of General Christopher Musa, remain committed to upholding global best practices.
He therefore, urged Amnesty International to provide evidence to substantiate their claims for a proper inquiry into the allegations.
