Igbo Diaspora Urged to Invest in Homeland Through “Aku Ruo Ulo” Initiative for Sustainable Development

By Grace Ofurum

Igbos living abroad have been called upon to channel their financial, intellectual, and social resources into the development of their homeland, particularly in the South East region of Nigeria.

This appeal was made by Rev. Dr. Chidi Okoroafor, a distinguished clergyman and senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Evangel University, Ebonyi State. He delivered a lecture during the Nigerian Political science Association South East Zone Conference held at Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State.

Dr. Okoroafor emphasized the significance of the Aku Ruo Ulo (translated as “wealth must reach home”) initiative, describing it as a strategic movement designed to encourage Igbos in the diaspora to invest their resources in their native communities. According to him, this initiative has the potential to stimulate economic growth, alleviate poverty, create jobs, and foster sustainable development in the region.

“The Aku Ruo Ulo initiative is a pathway for regional development. It provides much-needed capital, fosters entrepreneurship, and strengthens local economies, ultimately enhancing infrastructure and promoting sustainable growth,” he explained.

Despite its potential, Dr. Okoroafor acknowledged that the initiative faces challenges such as bureaucratic bottlenecks, insufficient funding, infrastructure gaps, and socio-political instability. He stressed the importance of addressing these barriers to fully harness the initiative’s benefits.

“While the initiative has made significant progress, addressing its challenges is crucial for maximizing its impact. Overcoming these hurdles will ensure sustainable development and long-term success,” he said.

Dr. Okoroafor expressed optimism about the future of the Aku Ruo Ulo initiative, stating that it holds immense promise for economic growth, social development, and cultural preservation in Igboland. He highlighted the critical role of the Igbo diaspora in bridging global opportunities with local needs, thereby contributing to the self-sufficiency and prosperity of their homeland.

“The Igbo diaspora has been pivotal in advancing the economic and cultural development of their homeland through the Aku Ruo Ulo initiative. By leveraging their resources, skills, and networks, they can drive local development and foster a thriving Igbo land,” he concluded.
