In a bid to strengthen humanitarian responses across West Africa, a capacity-building workshop on Monitoring, Evaluation, and Financial Reporting of ECOWAS Humanitarian Interventions opened on November 5, 2024, in Suleja, Niger State, Nigeria.
The workshop, which runs until November 8, aims to enhance the coordination, effectiveness, and accountability of humanitarian efforts in the ECOWAS region.
Organised by the ECOWAS Commission’s Directorate of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, the workshop is being attended by key focal persons responsible for disaster management and humanitarian response from member states.
It serves as a platform to build skills in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and financial reporting—tools essential for tracking progress, resource usage, and the impact of humanitarian projects.
Speaking while declaring the Workshop open, a representative of Nigeria’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Ezenekwe Tochukwu, underscored the importance of coordinated and data-driven approaches to tackling the complex challenges facing the region.
The ECOWAS Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, Dr. Sintiki T. Ugbe, emphasised that efficient M&E systems ensure resources are maximised, responses are swift, and humanitarian interventions have a lasting impact.
The training includes hands-on sessions, enabling participants to use an ECOWAS Humanitarian M&E platform designed for seamless data entry, analysis, and sharing across member states.
At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to gain practical skills for effective reporting and evidence-based decision-making to meet the growing humanitarian needs in West Africa.
