The ECOWAS Court of Justice has elected Justice Ricardo Gonçalves and Justice Sengu Koroma as its new President and Vice President, signaling a fresh chapter in the Court’s leadership.
This election, held on Monday, October 14, 2024, by the Court’s five-judge panel, ushers in a two-year term for the new heads of the judicial body.
Justice Gonçalves, from Cabo Verde, takes over from Justice Edward Amoako Asante, who has led the Court with distinction since July 31, 2018. Justice Koroma of Sierra Leone succeeds Justice Gberi-bè Ouattara as Vice President.
In his inaugural speech, Justice Gonçalves set a bold vision for the Court’s future, emphasizing the importance of responsibility, collaboration, and open dialogue in navigating the complex challenges facing the region.
“The ECOWAS Court of Justice is more than an institution; it stands as a pillar of fairness and trust for our community.
We must preserve its independence, efficiency, and accessibility for all,” Justice Gonçalves stated. He underscored the Court’s role in fostering dialogue between ECOWAS institutions, member states, and civil society while maintaining strict financial responsibility in its operations.
Justice Gonçalves called for unity and accountability, vowing to strengthen the judiciary’s capacity to address regional disputes and protect citizens’ rights across West Africa.
He expressed optimism that under his leadership, the Court will rise to meet its challenges and solidify its role as a guardian of justice in the ECOWAS region.
