In recent times, attention has been on the upbringing and well-being of the girl child and many organisations, national, and international, have been in the forefront to ensure the girl child is educated and her needs are prioritised thereby, leaving the boy child to fend for himself.
This informed this meeting at the instance of the Great Achievers Initiative for Youth and Community Development which engaged students speaking on what they think is the way forward for the boy child.
Speaker after speaker at the forum in commemoration of the 2024 International Day of the Boy Child in Abuja, called for intentional parenting where the boy child is given equal opportunity to thrive.
According to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, represented by his Senior Legislative Aide on Budget Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting, Justin Nwankwo, Nigeria has all it takes to train up a child irrespective of class or gender but more often than not, the boy child is left to his fate.
The Deputy Spokesperson of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Chidi Ndukwe who reeled the achievements of the anti-drug agency in the past 50 years, urged the students to become anti-drug ambassadors.
Other speakers, including Adedeji Aderele, Ujunwa Akpua among others made a case for the boy child while the convener of the event, Hillary Akpua, said, everything starts from the family and the society will not be good if a family does not have a good son who will uphold the legacy.
He stressed the need for all children to be given equal rights, saying it will boost their morale to be better children.
The International day of the boy child is celebrated on May 16 every year, to focus on boys and their well-being, their needs to feel happy, healthy, and valued within family and community.
