6th Nigeria, India Joint Commission Sign MoU on Cooperation on Renewable Energy

The Federal government of Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India on Cooperation on Renewable Energy at the 6th joint Commission of the two countries.

The agreement seeks to focus on development of new and renewable energy technologies like solar energy, wind energy, Biomass/ Bio-energy, Small Hydro and Capacity building.

Speaking at the sixth Nigeria, India Joint Commission meeting held in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, which reviewed decisions of the 5th Joint Commission and the entire scope of bilateral relations between India and Nigeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, commended Nigeria and India’s multifaceted cooperation.

Ambassador Tuggar, noted that the Minister of External Affairs of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who co- chaired the event, had earlier visited Lagos where he held productive meetings with the India-Nigeria Business Forum and also addressed the Nigerian Institute Of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos on India and the Global South.

He noted that Nigeria and India have a lot in common, including being the two largest democracies in Africa and Asia, the most populous hence they have a strong bond and that their relationship will continue to grow stronger.

In his response, the Minister of External Affairs of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, said India and Nigeria, share a long-standing and friendly relationship which is rooted in history in many ways and relationship this has been renewed by contacts between their leaders in recent years.

He disclosed that India is one of the top economic partners of Nigeria, with investments estimated at about 27 billion US Dollars and an annual trade turnover estimated at between 13-15 Billion US Dollars.

The meeting covered a wide range of sectors from Political, Culture, Aviation, Trade and Investment, Developmental Partnership, Defence and Security Cooperation to Consular Matters and Regional issues as well as Multilateral Cooperation while the seventh Nigeria, India Joint Commission meeting will be held in India.
