IWD 2023: Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament, Tunis Salutes Women

The Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament, Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis has commisrated with all women around the world, especially women of West Africa.
The speaker in a message on behalf of the Membership of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States and in his own name, said, the international theme for this year’s observance, “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for gender equality’, was carefully crafted to recognize and celebrate women and girls who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education.
Dr. Tunis noted the International Women’s Day by focusing on the importance of innovation and technology to campaigning for gender equality, one is reminded of the multiple benefits that can be derived from digitization.
According to him, with digitization and technology, women can be better informed about ail aspects of their lives and acquire basic skills that can lead to economic independence adding that women and girls can also gain access to online business and learning platforms and, can as well, use the digital space to share their views and network around issues thet affect them, including sexual harassment, gender violence and discrimination in all forms.
He pledged the commitment of the ECOWAS Parliament to playing its rightful role In contributing to regional programs that will address women’s issues, and affirm the Pertlament’s support for National Parliaments, as they legislate policies that address gender deparities.
Speaker Tunis, while expressing optimism that their policies will be accompanied by more practical implementations, acknowledged and commended the important steps taken by ECOWAS Member States to address Gender issues.
The world celebrates International Women’s Day, on March 8 each year and the day is set aside to shine the spotlight on women’s issues and create awareness for a more incisive, equal and gender sensitive society.
