Voter apathy will remain a recurring problem to credible elections in Nigeria as noticed in the just concluded Area Council elections in the Federal capital territory, FCT
Voter turnout in many of the polling units were abysmally low especially in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC which had a total of 687,274 registerd voters but recorded 33,764 total votes cast, 35,010 accredited voters while 911 votes were rejected.
Meanwhile, the Returning Officer for the Area Council, Professor Sanni Saka has declared Christopher Zakka of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the Chairmanship election for the Abuja Municipal Area Council with 19,302 votes followed by the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate Murtala Karshi with 13,240 votes and was followed by the candidate of Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Abubakar Idris who got 287 votes.
African Action Congress, AAC, scored the lowest with 29 votes in Chairmanship polls which had 14 contenders from 14 political parties.
In a press interview after his declaration as the winner, PDP’s Christopher Zakka, said he would improve in whatever the previous administration has done in the Council Area while promising to carry all along in assuring that the area council becomes the envy of all.
