WAPP Re-elects Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, Prioritises Regional Power Market
Millions of electricity consumers across West Africa stand to benefit from a more reliable and integrated power system as the West African Power Pool (WAPP) renews its leadership commitment to strengthening regional electricity cooperation.
Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz has been unanimously re-elected Chairman of the WAPP Executive Board for another three-year term, with a renewed focus on compliance, sustainable funding and strong institutional frameworks for the regional electricity market.
His re-election took place at the 68th WAPP Executive Board Meeting in Lomé, Togo, on 8 and 9 October 2026.
Abdulaziz urged member utilities to fulfil their financial obligations and support the implementation of key decisions needed to build a viable regional electricity market.
He stressed that statutory contributions were essential to WAPP’s autonomy, warning that inadequate funding could undermine its ability to deliver on its mandate.
The chairman also highlighted network synchronisation and the launch of the regional electricity market as critical milestones, noting that their success would depend on reliable data, clear operating rules, sound financial mechanisms and effective governance.
The meeting reviewed progress towards establishing the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), including plans to strengthen its institutional independence while ensuring operational continuity through the WAPP Information and Coordination Centre.
WAPP Secretary General, Mr Abdoulaye Dia, said the organisation was implementing institutional reforms ahead of the second phase of the regional electricity market, expected to begin early next year.
The Board also adopted the Charter of the Forum for Women in Energy in West Africa and a memorandum of understanding with Millennium Challenge Account Côte d’Ivoire.
It further reviewed membership applications from four utilities in Nigeria, Senegal and Niger, which are expected to be ratified at the WAPP General Assembly before the end of the year.
WAPP’s regional electricity market is designed to strengthen cross-border power trade and improve the efficient use of electricity resources among participating West African countries.
