NFF Crisis: FIFA Council To Consider Nigeria’s Football Future October 15
Nigeria’s football leadership crisis will come before FIFA’s Council on October 15, with stakeholders awaiting clarity on the reforms that will shape the future of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The matter, according to reports, has been listed under Article 7, “Miscellaneous”, on the agenda for the FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, scheduled to begin at 11:00 CET via videoconference.
The development follows the mass resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s executive board in August, which disrupted preparations for the planned elective congress.
FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) subsequently sent a fact-finding mission to Nigeria in September to consult football stakeholders and gather proposals for reform.
A key issue is whether FIFA will approve a Normalisation Committee or support an alternative transition arrangement.
While some stakeholders favour a committee to oversee reforms and fresh elections, state football association chairmen have argued that the existing NFF Congress should lead the process.
The National Sports Commission, led by Shehu Dikko, has also engaged FIFA on a roadmap for restructuring the federation.
However, Nigeria’s inclusion under the miscellaneous agenda item does not automatically mean that a final decision will be announced at the meeting.
The October 15 deliberations are expected to be closely watched as Nigerian football awaits clarity on its leadership structure, governance reforms and the path towards fresh elections.
Until FIFA issues a formal decision, the composition of any transitional body and the timetable for restoring elected leadership remain uncertain.
