Lawyer Demands Power Devolution, Resource Control, Loan Scrutiny
Senior lawyer Amobi Nzelu has called for a major overhaul of Nigeria’s federal structure, demanding greater powers for states, resource control and tighter scrutiny of government borrowing.
Nzelu, Principal of Chinenye Chambers, made the call in a press interview, arguing that excessive concentration of power and resources in Abuja has hindered national development.
He urged the Federal Government to revisit Nigeria’s earlier regional arrangement, which granted regions substantial autonomy, and devolve more responsibilities to the states.
The lawyer also questioned Nigeria’s continued reliance on borrowing despite its vast natural resources, insisting that every proposed loan should undergo rigorous scrutiny and that the public must know how borrowed funds will be spent.
He further urged President Bola Tinubu to review his administration’s governance approach and prioritise citizens’ welfare over political and personal interests.
Nzelu called for leadership that responds to the economic difficulties facing ordinary Nigerians, expressing optimism that greater accountability, patriotism and commitment to national development could help the country overcome its challenges.
