Idam Urges NAFDAC To Verify Claims Of Harmful Chemicals In Sanitary Pads
The safety of sanitary pads used routinely by millions of women and girls has come under fresh scrutiny, with Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Weekenders Magazine, Princess Joy Omagha Idam, urging the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to urgently verify claims that some products may contain harmful chemicals.
Idam called on NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, to launch an independent investigation and conduct laboratory tests on sanitary pads available in the Nigerian market.
She said the agency’s findings should be made public to provide clear, scientific information and prevent unnecessary fear or speculation among consumers.
“This is not about creating fear or attacking manufacturers. It is about protecting Nigerian women and girls and giving the public accurate information. NAFDAC must verify these claims and tell Nigerians the truth,” Idam said.
She also urged manufacturers and importers to cooperate with any regulatory investigation, stressing that consumer safety should take precedence over commercial interests.
Idam said NAFDAC should take appropriate regulatory action against any product found to fall below required safety standards.
She added that a prompt and transparent investigation would help separate facts from rumours and enable women and families to make informed decisions about the products they use.
