NCC Trains Over 100 Persons With Disabilities In Digital Skills, Online Safety
More than 100 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Lagos have been equipped with digital skills to improve their online safety, independence and participation in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
The training, organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on September 9 and 10, focused on digital citizenship, cybersecurity, data protection and assistive technologies.
Participants were trained to identify online scams, protect personal information, safeguard their digital identities and use accessibility tools, including speech-to-text technology, to improve their interaction with digital devices.
The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, said digital inclusion must extend beyond internet connectivity to ensuring that PWDs have the knowledge and confidence to use technology safely and productively.
Represented by the Director, Digital Economy Department, Helen Obi, Maida said technology could help remove barriers to education, employment, entrepreneurship and access to public services.
“You are not merely beneficiaries; you are important participants and contributors to Nigeria’s digital economy,” he told the participants.
The Lagos training is part of a wider NCC programme targeting PWDs across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. It builds on initiatives including the Commission’s E-Accessibility Project and support for assistive technology research.
Maida also called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, technology companies, development partners and disability organisations to ensure accessibility is considered in the design of digital products and services.
The NCC said its goal is to build a digital environment where disability does not become a barrier to learning, working, doing business or accessing essential services.
