NISO Deepens Capacity Drive For Safer, More Reliable National Grid
A reliable electricity grid depends not only on infrastructure and technology, but also on the people making critical decisions in real time.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) is strengthening that human capacity with the second phase of its training programme for system operators.
Declaring the programme open, NISO Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, said continuous training was essential as Nigeria’s power system becomes more complex and operational demands increase.
He said system operators must combine technical competence with sound judgement, discipline, teamwork and a strong commitment to safety.
The training, he added, is designed to build a shared operational culture based on professionalism, integrity, neutrality, reliability and continuous improvement.
Mohammed urged participants to deepen their knowledge of the Grid Code and ensure that lessons from the programme translate into improved performance across NISO’s control centres.
Executive Director, System Operations, Engr. Nafisatu Ali, said operators play a critical role in monitoring and managing the national grid, coordinating generation and power flows, managing outages, responding to emergencies and maintaining the balance between generation and demand.
She urged participants to strengthen their skills in voltage and frequency control, power-flow monitoring, real-time balancing and coordination between control rooms, while using lessons from system disturbances and near misses to prevent future incidents.
Executive Director, Finance and Corporate Services, Babajide Ibironke, said the programme must deliver measurable value, adding that participants would be expected to share their knowledge with their respective teams.
The initiative forms part of NISO’s broader effort to build the skilled workforce needed to support a safer, more stable and efficient Nigerian electricity grid.
