Federal Government Declares Public Holiday For Eid-ul-Mawlid
The Federal Government has declared a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, and issued on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, urging Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the Prophet’s life and teachings.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.
He urged Nigerians to embrace these values, saying they were needed in the country “now more than ever”.
The minister also called on Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to reflect on the lessons of the occasion.
